An international toll free number, or ITFN, is a telephone number that can be dialled free of charge and which will then connect the caller to a company representative in another country. ITFNs can vary by number format and may be different to traditional in-country toll free numbers, often know as known as domestic toll free numbers, or DTFs. Domestic toll free numbers are normally for in-country call forwarding only.
ITFNs are typically used by businesses as an inexpensive and flexible way to create a virtual local presence as they expand their operations into other countries. For example, if a UK company wished to expand its business into Sweden, it could purchase a consignment of Swedish toll free numbers for the use of new customers in that country who may, for example, require product support. The company would then have the option to forward these calls to any Sweden-based employees, have them forwarded via an international toll free service to the company’s UK HQ, or direct the calls to a third-party telephone answering service or call centre, almost anywhere in the world. This can all add up to considerable cost savings.
